On the name

A linen warp, a wool weft.

Linsey-woolsey was a linen warp with a wool weft. It was woven at home, on long evenings, and worn until the elbows went soft.

It was not a cloth anyone remarked on. It kept the wind out. It dried by the fire. It was handed on.

That seems about right.

Each season, a few looks. A jacket left by the boot-room door. A spaniel asleep under the reading lamp. A shirt that was meant for someone larger. A watch that was someone’s grandfather’s.
